On this day 76 years ago, the People’s Government of Macedonia decided to publish the first official Orthography of the Macedonian Language, according to Prime Minister Zoran Zaev in a Facebook post highlighting the uniqueness of the Macedonian language and its being recognized by the United Nations.
On June 7, 1945, at the proposal of the Ministry of Public Education, the People’s Government of Macedonia adopted a Decision on the Orthography of the Macedonian Language, followed by copies of it being published by the Ministry of Public Education as booklets, PM Zaev writes.
The adoption of the orthography of the Macedonian language completed the codification of the Macedonian language, after it was proclaimed the official language of the Macedonian state on August 2, 1944, and the Macedonian alphabet adopted on May 5, 1945, he adds.
“This Government is sincerely and strongly committed to nurturing and promoting the Macedonian language,” Zaev continues.
“This is because our language is our identity. As long as the Macedonian language exists, Macedonians will exist. As long as Macedonians exist, the Macedonian language will exist. It is so because these two cannot be without each other. They have existed and will exist in a beautiful and unbreakable symbiosis.”
The Government, Zaev notes, has made the Orthography of the Macedonian language available for free to every speaker of Macedonian at www.pravopis.mk. The Orthography will soon also be made searchable at www.makedonski.gov.mk, the website of the official Macedonian Language Dictionary.
“I’m confident that just as we celebrate these great and important anniversaries of the Macedonian language, future generations of Macedonians will celebrate all future anniversaries of the Macedonian language,” Zaev writes.
