Slovakia’s political support for opening EU accession negotiations with North Macedonia is very clear and we remain committed to supporting it, Tomáš Strážaj, Head of the Slovak Foreign Policy Association (SFPA) said Wednesday.
“Slovakia, together with the Czech Republic reaffirmed clear support for start of EU accession negotiations at the EU Summit in December last year, where the two countries refused to agree to unfair terms imposed by some EU member states in relation to the process of integration of North Macedonia in the EU,” Strážaj said.
Strážaj addressed the 2nd session of the Second cycle of Working Group 5 – Environment (Chapter 27), titled “Air pollution and the relation to central heating” of the National Convention on the EU in North Macedonia (NCEU-MK).
He also reminded that Bratislava’s support was affirmed during recent visit of the Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Korčok to North Macedonia earlier this month. Korčok, who visited the country on Feb. 8, voiced hope that obstacles to the adoption of European Union’s negotiation framework for North Macedonia would be removed and that this would happen during the Portuguese EU presidency. He also urged the country to commit to reforms, especially the fight against corruption.
