“There is no spare planet” is the slogan of the new “EU with YOU” campaign focused on the European Green Deal, which will be promoted today by the Head of the European Union Delegation to the country David Geer and Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Nikola Dimitrov.
The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness on the European Green Deal and its key objective – to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emission by 2050, thus making Europe the first climate neutral continent.
North Macedonia has committed to working towards this goal for 2050 together with the European Union through the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, approved by the leaders of the Western Balkan countries at the Summit of the Berlin Process in Sofia in 2020. The campaign calls for strong political commitment and immediate action at all levels as time is running out.
Climate change and environmental degradation, as the EU Office in the country points out, are an existential threat to the region, Europe and the world. These threats demand an immediate and ambitious response and every one of us can make a difference by getting involved. Because the future of all of us depends on a healthy planet. The European Union has taken the lead role in the global fight against climate change and has set the European Green Deal as a plan for transformation of Europe, including the Western Balkans region, into a climate neutral continent by 2050.
-The “EU with YOU” campaign for the European Green Deal sets a “Museum of the Future” as a reminder of what can be lost during our lives due to climate change and environmental degradation. It is a wake-up call for the potential loss of the most essential things on the planet, such as fresh water, clean air, but also of locally valuable products such as the well-known tomato – Jabucar for North Macedonia. Therefore, the campaign calls for strong political commitment for mitigation of climate change, prevention of pollution, protection of biological diversity, promotion of sustainable agriculture and food production, decarbonization of energy and transportation. A difference can be made only through initiative and action – both at the national and local level. The European Union can help by offering expertise, advice and with significant funding within the framework of its available instruments. In this “race to zero”, it is necessary for everyone to reach the goal and it is necessary for every one of us to contribute for the European Green Deal to become a reality, is said from the EU Office in the country.
