No matter how much one might say that this is a donquixote attempt of mine, from time to time, I do this kind of quiz. Indeed, sometimes we need to stop a little in our headless run through time, events and the struggle for survival, and to look inside ourselves. To ask ourselves what do we believe in and what do we expect from society and the institutions. To ask, as loudly as possible, if and how much of what is guaranteed or promised by the Constitution, laws or pre-election promises we actually recognize in the daily actions of those who have taken the right to say that they are representing us, regardless if they are in power or in opposition. There, this is one of the donquixote attempts. You can say I’ve fallen from Mars, or that my attempts are useless, but I will never stop with my attempts.
I expect from my country, the institutions and from my fellow citizens to give their utmost and to maximally respect human dignity and human rights and freedoms every day. I expect to live in freedom and democracy, in a country with the rule of law. I expect and demand! I want social and environmental justice to rule in every city and village – no matter how much it sounds like a sentence from an essay in primary school.
From a government of a country for which the Constitution says that it’s social, I expect an economy to be created in harmony with the needs of the communities and with economic justice, for it to be a significant, if not essential, part of the economic programs of the progressive political parties.
I demand to live in a society governed by equality, and not fear, to live in an environment in which everyone has equal opportunities, while the institutions prevent and sanction discrimination, hatred and violence. I want to see that equality is fulfilled in every respect, and for gender equality not to be forgotten in any way. On the contrary, I believe that it should be the starting point, because women are the majority that is mostly marginalized and suffers discrimination and violence on all grounds on a daily basis. I want to see a feminist government, feminist municipal councils, feminist oriented institutions and media. I’m dreaming? Yes. Is it possible? Also – yes.
I demand from the country in which the Constitution guarantees equality of those who are different, to take an anti-nationalism course and to stay on it forever. Only in this way it’s possible for peace to prevail and for conditions to be created for the well-being of all citizens. Only in this will society experience transformation in favor of all, where economic, social and environmental well-being will govern.
This lovely country deserves for the institutions to understand and apply bioethics, and to foster diversity of the natural world, to become part of the efforts for preserving the Earth’s physical resources. I demand for the governments that change as deck of cards to start building a sustainable society that guarantees a long-term future for the generations after us.
We all have a right to basic material security, for our basic human needs to be fulfilled. People must return solidarity in their lives.
What is unclear in the constitutionally guaranteed equality? I want to see societies in which that equality strengthens from day to day, a society without discrimination along ethnic, racial, gender, religious and social lines, or sexual orientation or any other type of affiliation. How difficult is it to understand that this is part of all normal, human standards, rights and freedoms, the basis of human civilization for 80 years now, if not much longer?
I demand for the citizens to truly participate in decision-making, and for the institutions to manifest flexibility in accordance with the needs of the people. I demand transparency and accountability, personal and institutional. I have the right to that!
We have to understand that by respecting the interests of minorities and of all the different communities in society and maximum conditions for the development of individuals, we will provide a decent future for the generations after us, and we will create conditions for permanent solutions to the crises.
Employers have the obligation to care for the employees and to respect their right to strike.
And now, do you recognize any of this happening in your life? You can underline, or the page will remain empty.
Let’s conclude:
My rights and freedoms are universal and are indivisible. They belong to me because I was born as a human being. No one has the right to take them away, to respect one of my rights more than another. What is not clear in this?
