Republic of North Macedonia и Republic of Albania as neighboring friendly countries, share the same values and have a common future. That common future is in the EU and I am convinced that soon both countries will start negotiations for membership in the Union because both Northern Macedonia and Albania have so far fulfilled everything that was asked of them. Now it is the EU’s turn, he said the president of SDSM and prime minister-designate for the composition of the new government, Dimitar Kovacevski at today’s meeting with the President of the Republic of Albania Ilir Meta.
At the meeting, as SDSM announced, they discussed several current topics, but the focus was on mutual cooperation, the Open Balkans initiative and the European integration process.
The Albanian President stressed that the progress that Northern Macedonia has made in the past few years is obvious, welcomed the concept “One Society for All”, describing it as a unique example in the region, and stressed that the start of negotiations between Albania and Northern Macedonia is not only important. for both countries, but it is in the interest of the whole region of the Western Balkans.
Kovacevski expressed confidence that the current cooperation between the two countries will be further intensified through the Open Balkans. Regarding bilateral and regional cooperation, he stressed that the Open Balkans is an important step towards advancing cooperation between the countries, brings new opportunities for economic growth and development. However, Kovacevski believes that this is not an alternative to EU membership, but could be of serious help in joining the Union.
Kovacevski also announced the intensification of infrastructure projects on Corridor 8, which will provide, as he said, a better connection between Northern Macedonia and Albania.
The meeting between Kovacevski and Meta was also attended by the Secretary for International Cooperation, Bojan Maricic.
