It is a strategic goal for Slovakia that North Macedonia and Albania join the EU as soon as possible, which is why Bratislava believes that they should start the negotiations together, State Secretary at the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs Martin Klus said in Skopje on Thursday.
“This would be easier for both countries, and for us, because it will be easier to share our experiences, including Slovakia’s, which are not always positive.
“If the two countries start negotiations together, North Macedonia and Albania will be able to join the EU faster. This is a strategic goal of Slovakia,” Klus said during today’s event promoting a Slovak donation to the Pediatric Clinic.
In response to a reporter’s question regarding the rumors on the so-called non-papers circulating in recent weeks, Klus said it probably was better that their authors were unknown because those documents put forth a dangerous idea of changing the region’s borders.
“Any attempt to discuss the ghosts of the past and changing borders should be taken off the table,” Klus said.
“We need to focus on the positive agenda and on the EU enlargement process, and not on historical, linguistic or bilateral issues.”
He reiterated that Slovakia supports the EU enlargement process because of its great importance not only for the region but also for Slovakia.
