Power Plants of North Macedonia (ESM) announced Friday three projects – construction of a gas power plant, photovoltaic power plants and heating for the city of Bitola – worth EUR 350 million.
ESM director general Vasko Kovachevski said the project aimed to enhance the ongoing energy transformation, which is highly rated by the European Energy Community, and make investments in renewable energy sources across the country.
“Our policy is based on two pillars – maintaining the country’s energy stability and protection of the environment and people’s health. Investments in mining-energy company (REK) Bitola in the coming period will focus on energy transformation and a move towards the green scenario. This includes the 200-400MW cogeneration gas power plant used for electricity production and heating of the city of Bitola, substituting two REK Bitola blocs. The start of this investment is planned after the end of the 2025-2026 heating season and worth in total about EUR 200 million,” said Kovachevski.
Photovoltaic plants will be built within REK Bitola, part of the Intervention Plan for Investments. Two state-owned 10MW and one 40MW plants are to be constructed first.
“In addition, another two, 50MW each, photovoltaic plants are to be built in the form of public-private partnership, similar to REK Oslomej, where we are about to sign a contract with companies from Turkey and Bulgaria. Another significant project for the city of Bitola is the heating network worth EUR 35 million, which is due to be developed as of this fall. These three projects are all worth EUR 350 million,” noted Kovachevski.
