The French Ambassador to Albania, Elizabeth Barsacsaid Albania and Northern Macedonia should not be separated on their path to EU integration.
In an interview with Euronews Albania yesterday, Barsak acknowledged that the desire to separate the two countries came from frustration over Bulgaria’s veto of northern Macedonia.
– Regarding this issue, I believe that we should overcome the idea that these two nations can be separated. I know that many say that these two countries were treated as one and because things are not going so well between Northern Macedonia and Bulgaria, then they should be separated. “This needs to be overcome and we need to do our best so that the two intergovernmental conferences can be held at the same time,” Barsak said.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, during his last address to the nation in 2021, on December 31, said he would try to separate Albania’s path from northern Macedonia if Bulgaria persists in its veto. European diplomats and politicians, however, have repeatedly spoken out against the proposal.
Although both Albania and Northern Macedonia formally met all the requirements, in June last year, the EU General Affairs Council failed to reach an agreement on starting accession talks with the EU, due to Bulgaria’s veto on Northern Macedonia.
