NEWS OF THE DAY: Citizens to the census – politics aside
“The upcoming census is purely a statistical operation and there is no room for any politicization”, said the Director of the State Statistical Office, Apostol Simovski, at the panel discussion “How the census can be (mis) used?” that was organized by CIVIL.
The panel discussion was also attended by the Mayor of the City of Skopje, Petre Shilegov, and Dehran Muratov, activist and coordinator from CIVIL. The panel was moderated by journalist Zoran Ivanov.
Simovski, among else, pointed out that nowadays on the labour market there is a huge shortage of labour force, the census will show us this precisely and will enable us to create conditions for our citizens working abroad to return to the country. The Mayor of the City of Skopje, Petre Shilegov, shared the same position, who particularly emphasized the importance of the census for the local government, where citizens practically endure in their everyday lives. Muratov put a special accent on the anti-campaign for the census, locating it also among members of smaller ethnic communities.
“In absence of offering a political program, some political entities coming from those ethno environments try to use the census atmosphere for realizing their ambitions in politics, and all this at the expense of the successfulness of the census”, said Muratov.

The Director of the State Statistical Office, Apostol Simovski, in an interview for CIVIL says that the census is necessary and that he is optimistic that it will be conducted in April this year.
