NEWS OF THE DAY: Parliament by consensus adopts amended Law on prevention and protection from violence against women and domestic violence

The Parliament at today’s 32nd session adopted the amended Draft Law on prevention and protection from violence against women and domestic violence. Furthermore, MPs adopted the amended draft Law on balanced regional development with 50 votes “for” and 23 “abstentions”. The debate ended for both laws at the previous continuations of the plenary session.

The amended Law on balanced regional development was adopted with support of the opposition party VMRO-DPMNE, which was in the hall and abstained from voting. Nikola Micevski, Coordinator of parliamentary group said that they would abstain from voting, which would allow for the law to be adopted, outlining that three of their amendments to this law have been accepted, thus approving the legal solution.

The Parliament had a quorum for work, but the ruling majority did not have enough MPs for voting, so for some of the legal solutions and reports for which the debate ended there will be additional voting.

STATEMENT OF THE DAY: Zaev: The Holocaust must never be forgotten or repeated

“May the fire of the memory of the Holocaust shine forever, which we mark every year on January 27, in memory, honour and glory of 7 million Jewish mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, friends and neighbours – who lost their lives in fascist camps of death”, wrote Prime Minister Zoran Zaev on his Facebook profile on the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

“On this day, and every other day, to repeat ‘Never to be forgotten, never to be repeated’, and to keep the memories also of our 7,200 fellow citizens who from Skopje, Bitola and Stip were deported in the wagons of death to Treblinka in Poland. For the memory of them to always remind us that silence can be an accomplice to evil and that our duty is to oppose every form of fascism, fanaticism, racism, xenophobia and genocide in every situation”, wrote Zaev.
