Bulgaria is reintroducing the mask mandate as a response to the country’s surge of new SARS-CoV-2 infections, according to Angel Kunchev, Chief State Health Inspector at the Bulgarian Ministry of Health, transmits MIA.
Kunchev told Bulgarian National Radio that the country’s new SARS-Cov-2 wave was fueled by a much more contagious variant of the virus. He said the situation was changing very rapidly and the country needed to be prepared.
Kunchev also said he would propose to the health authorities a new pandemic plan for protecting the population from the virus. Protective measures include wearing masks and limiting gatherings, he said, adding that the protections were expected to enter into force from Monday.
Stressing that this would not undermine the tourist season or the economy, Kunchev said when decisions were being made in a complicated situation, including the decisions by the National Health Insurance Fund of Bulgaria, officials needed to prioritize protecting people’s health over saving money.
