I think that we have to show to the people, that the liberal democracy checks and balances is about to deliver what they want.
If the efficiency of the democratic governance is the question, we have no problem. And clearly, today we have this problem. We have a lot of citizens who believe that authoritarianism is better, and we have to show, and it’s a responsibility of the politicians to do it, and to make the citizens be aware of that if we want to keep the democracy, we need to deliver the change, to deliver a better life, pointed Jean-Yves Leconte, former member of the Senate, France, on the panel “Defeating Putin and Authoritarianism: The Quest for Peace, Justice and Democracy”, at the Conference “Resisting Aggression, Defeating Authoritarianism”.
And for that, we need to work a good program, we need to show the people that it’s not because we will make change, because checks and balances, we can discuss, we can debate, and we can find the best compromise to unite, all to drive society to the change. I think, because today there are a lot of challenges, and the politicians are not ready to make the changes.
I am sure that, at the end, checks and balances will have more efficiency than authoritarian regimes, and we have to show that. And this freedom, this democracy, is exactly what we have seen since three years in Ukraine. It’s not because Zelensky is Zelensky, it’s because each Ukrainian take part in coordination, in, unity.
