CIVIL – Center for Freedom, an organization with extensive experience in election monitoring, asserts that the election process for the “re-election” of the Russian president flagrantly violates democratic principles and standards.
There are no conditions conducive to a fair and democratic election process in the Russian Federation. The so-called elections will merely serve to further oppress the population, potentially with the greatest violence witnessed since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The political landscape surrounding the 2024 Russian elections is dictatorial, characterized by strict control and military censorship of the media. The opposition in Russia has effectively been dismantled, particularly following the assassination of the prominent opposition leader Alexei Navalny on February 16, 2024.
This condemnation of the “elections” orchestrated by the Putin regime extends to the occupied territories in Ukraine and Transnistria in Moldova. These elections are blatantly illegal and illegitimate, conducted under the constant threat of violence and coercion.
The staging of the so-called elections for the President of the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, under the specter of repression and torture, represents a flagrant violation of international law.
Considering the UN Charter, the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, and the Geneva Convention for the Protection of Civilian Populations in Time of War, the organization of such elections by the aggressor state on Ukrainian sovereign territory is illegal. Consequently, the outcomes of such presidential elections hold no legal validity.
CIVIL urges the international community and the governments of democratic nations worldwide to denounce Putin’s latest campaign, which he falsely labels as “elections.” Furthermore, CIVIL calls upon the citizens of Russia, as well as those residing in the occupied territories, to resist the dictator from the Kremlin.
