Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said the government has made a formal decision to join the NATO defence alliance, transmits MIA.
“We are leaving one era and entering a new one,” Andersson said in Stockholm alongside Ulf Kristersson, the head of the main opposition Moderate Party.
Their announcement came shortly after almost all parties in parliament expressed support for an application for membership during a debate session.
Andersson’s ruling Social Democratic Party already said at the weekend it supported the move, making the application all but certain.
