The UN Security Council is expected to address Russia’s recognition of Ukraine’s breakaway provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk in an emergency session requested by countries including the United States, according to diplomatic sources, MIA news agency informs.
The request was also backed by France, Britain, Albania, Norway and Ireland and could take place later on Monday, dpa learned.
The Western members of the 15-country UN Security Council had prepared various steps in case of a Russian attack on Ukraine or other forms of escalation, including a draft resolution calling on Moscow to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
It was not immediately clear whether this text would be considered in the upcoming session.
Russia, which currently chairs the Security Council, could try to prevent the meeting from taking place by holding a vote in which fewer than nine countries agree to the talks. This is considered unlikely.
