The Government reviewed and adopted Monday the harmonized text of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the development of the railway networking between the Republic of North Macedonia and the Republic of Bulgaria “Skopje-Sofia”, which is to be signed during the joint government session in Sofia on Tuesday.
The document constitutes consent over the formation of a joint Working Group comprised of expects possessing professional capacity and expertise in areas such as project management, European and international law, engineering and finance management, for the purpose of speeding up the process of preparatory and implementation activities in the project, the Government said in a press release.
The MoU, it adds, is drafted considering the bilateral goodneioghborly relations and the need to strengthen economic and trade activities, highlighting the common goal for development of the ‘Skopje-Sofia Railway Networking Project’, which is of mutual and regional interest, and has significant strategic and economic significance for the countries’ citizens and economies.
According to the MoU, the Working Group will meet at least four times a year, at the level of experts, to work on the progress of the project’s implementation. On the part of North Macedonia, construction works on railway sections Kumanovo-Beljakovce and Beljakovce-Kriva Palanka are expected to resume this spring, in parallel with the announcement of a tender for the third section Kriva Palanka-Bulgaria border.
According to announcements, the entire project is to be completed in 2027.
