EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, will meet with the Western Balkan leaders over a working dinner on Tuesday, to discuss the EU’s strategy in the region, MIA’s Brussels correspondent reports.
The goal of the High Representative is to bring together the six leaders from the region and listen to their views on how to make the EU more engaged and present in the region.
At the meeting of EU foreign ministers on May 10, Borrell underlined it was unacceptable that the Western Balkans had not been on the agenda of the EU Foreign Affairs Council for two years, adding that he won’t allow for another two year to pass without the region on the agenda.
The Western Balkans will be on the agenda before the summer, said the EU foreign policy chief.
“The Western Balkans is part of the problem, but it is also part of the solution,” Borrell said, adding that the region needs to be looked at from the geopolitical perspective with its leaders as well.
Prime Minister Zoran Zaev will represent North Macedonia at Tuesday’s dinner hosted by the EU’s Borrell in Brussels. On Wednesday, PM Zaev is to meet with European Council President Charles Michel.
