European Commission spokesperson Ana Pisonero said during a press briefing on Tuesday that EU’s decision to deliver COVID-19 vaccines to Western Balkan countries proves that the region’s future lies in the European Union, MIA reports from Brussels.
She underlined that the delivery of the first batch of vaccines for the region, assisted by Austria, as well as the EUR 3.3 billion financial assistance for economic recovery, clearly demonstrate EU’s support for the Western Balkans.
Over 650,000 jabs are set to be distributed to Western Balkan countries, of which 119,000 to North Macedonia. Vaccine allocation is based on the needs of each country and shots are intended for inoculation of health workers and vulnerable groups, the EC spokesperson stressed.
“This sends a clear message that we care about the region and that its future lies in the European Union,” Pisonero noted.
