The debate regarding the census is over. North Macedonia will carry out the census April 1-21. We’re one of the only countries in the world that hasn’t conducted a census in 20 years and should carry out this process as soon as possible, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev told reporters Monday after signing a grant agreement for renewable sources of energy transition.
In the spirit of inclusivity and attempts to reach a consensus, Zaev added, the government showed understanding for all proposals, but now the discussion is done.
“We’ve been debating the census for nine years. Enough discussions, let’s get the job done. The census won’t change anything, it won’t grant or revoke any privileges,” the PM said.
The census, he stressed, will provide crucial statistical information.
“The methodology has been published and all questions have been answered. Every citizen has the responsibility to take part in the process, with serious sanctions in store for those who don’t. This is our civil responsibility and I believe we’ll all fulfill our duty,” Zaev noted.
The Prime Minister reiterated his call to stakeholders – political parties, civil organization, chambers, unions and citizens, to approach this statistical operation in a serious manner.
