Good neighbourly relations between North Macedonia and Bulgaria exist. Bulgaria is the first to recognise North Macedonia as an independent country and is a strong supporter of Europeanisation of entire region, especially the process of bringing North Macedonia closer to the EU. In addition, there is a Friendship Treaty and, in my opinion, it should be given life and consistently implemented, German Ambassador Anke Holstein said Friday.
In an interview with TV 24, Holstein said that Germany will remain a strong supporter of North Macedonia. It is important, she said, to use time to carry out reforms and to bring Europe to North Macedonia.
She referred to the Elysee Treaty, stressing that it did not state any obstacles such as identity, language and history between France and Germany.
“The Elysee Treaty was signed 18 years after the end of World War II and put an end to the so-called age-old enmity between the two countries, which created a political, legal and symbolic basis for mutual cooperation,” Holstein said.
Referring to the European Union, Holstein stressed that it is a community of values: democracy, rule of law, independent judiciary, free media and equality for all.
“The EU is founded on these values and unity in diversity is our motto. We must not tolerate developments in EU member states that are different from these values,” Holstein said.
